Meet the Artist

I first discovered ceramics in high school, and went on to specialize in hand building, making large organic ceramic sculptures at the University of New Hampshire, earning my Bachelor of Arts in Art.  I continued my sculpture and graduate study at Rhode Island School of Design, where I was graduate teaching assistant in hand building. I was surrounded by excellent pottery wheel throwers, which could have been very intimidating, but thankfully I realized that I was at RISD, not to compete with them, but because I was different than the other students.

Next my ideas starting flowing on a much smaller scale, in the form porcelain jewelry. My expertise was using colored porcelain to create feathercombed and marbled patterns (forms of slip trailing) on very thin porcelain slabs . My colored porcelain jewelry was sold nationwide in galleries, museum stores, gift stores, department stores, as well as many art & craft shows.

Since then, I have spent years adding more jewelry skills to my tool belt. Now I am back to my first love, ceramics!! I have a passion especially for raku!! The metallic iridescence and intense colors of raku take my breath away! I make both elegant and organic jewelry, and organic raku wall art and home decor. My favorite type of clay to work with is soft slabs, from which I can create organic gestures that show movement, flow, and immediacy. Many of my pieces feel like they are from the sea.

I am truly at home with clay and creating things with my hands. I hope you enjoy my raku art as much as I enjoy making it!!
